I'm an Australian. I want an iPhone. PDF Print E-mail

The era of 1.1.1 is over. As an Australian, if you have an interest in buying an iPhone for yourself or a loved one this Christmas, there's bad news for you...

It's not going to be easy.

There are five possible ways of obtaining an iPhone at the moment.

[1] eBay - Prices are ranging from $600 up to $1000 per iPhone (in AUD). Be careful about what firmware it is. If it is locked, it is most likely on 1.1.2, which is unlockable at the moment. Some sellers have upgraded their 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 (which is possible) and therefore, is why it is on the latest firmware. Average price of iPhone is around AUD$800 for a 1.1.1. It is cheaper if you buy from overseas, however, you risk customs and may never receive it. We are aware of sellers from the Asian region - be careful about fakes and untrustworthy sellers.

[2] Online retailers - There are many online retailers/distributors selling the iPhone from the USA and around Asia/Europe. Shipping is usually very expensive, however, you may be able to obtain a 1.1.1 iPhone. As they run out of stock, the prices go higher.

[3] Apple Online Store - You will have to use a credit card (They will track if it is from Australia and block your sale) and send to an online mail forwarder to Australia. Again, you risk customs (Australian and US). You will very likely be receiving a 1.1.2 iPhone.

[4] Friends/Relatives in the US - Unofficial Apple and AT&T stores still have stock of 1.1.1 iPhones. Most will sell only by offering the unlocking service to make a decent profit. Be prepared to pay $550+ for a 1.1.1 iPhone.

[5] Wait for it to come to Australia. When it comes over with Telstra, you will also receive support and warranty.

So, did you accidentally buy a 1.1.2 iPhone? What are your options?

[1] Jailbreak it and use it as an iPod Touch (Yes, this is possible)

[2] Purchase TurboSIM or StealthSIM (We have not received any positive feedback from both these methods and do not recommend them)

[3] Sell it (You'll probably make a small loss)

[4] Wait for the next update, which will be 1.1.3 - There is news that the new bootloader may be broken for hackers to unlock this. However, Apple is aware of this and may block off this solution

Until then, you will have to wait. The iPhone will come over... it is just a matter of time.
