If this turns out to be true, then this might be the most conclusive evidence of an impending 3G iPhone launch we've seen yet. A blog post at the Chronic Productions Blog writes that firmware 2.0 Beta 5 Network.plist file contains prefrences for 3G networks that can be activated somehow. OPTUS has become the second mobile carrier to announce it will release the iPhone locally, confirming Apple does not have an exclusive deal in Australia.
"Optus, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Globe today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia later this year," the company said in a statement.
The announcement comes exactly one week after Vodafone announced it will release the iPhone locally.
Optus' revelation confirms that Apple does not have an exclusive deal with an Australian carrier.
It is not known if the handset will be completely unlocked, and thus available on all mobile networks, or locked to Optus and Vodafone. |

Telstra will be the third mobile provider to sell the iPhone in Australia starting from the end of June, a source has confirmed to CNET.com.au.
The news that Telstra will carry the Apple handset comes in light of CNET.com.au's recent report that Optus also intends to sell the iPhone, and Vodafone's official announcement that it will be bringing the handset to 10 new markets.
Telstra's decision to offer the iPhone points to an imminent release of a highly-anticipated 3G model. |

Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.

Update (4:00pm 7/05/08):
"I'd be very surprised if it wasn't a 3G phone to go on sale here," said Mark Novosel, telecommunications analyst with technology research firm IDC.
Mr Novosel expects Vodafone to lock the iPhone to its network and sell it at a discounted rate.
"I'm sure they will have a special iPhone plan ... for instance they could throw in 1GB of data on a $49 cap," he said.
Mr Novosel expects other carriers to also offer the iPhone.
"Vodafone hasn't said it's an exclusive deal so I would expect other telcos to sell the iPhone," he said. "Apple wouldn't be able to sell many units if they made it exclusive because the local market is so small."
He didn't rule out Apple Australia selling iPhones directly and said a 16GB version could cost around $700.
Telstra and Apple could not be contacted while Hutchison and Optus declined to comment.[Source] |
