Here’s how to figure out what bootloader version you have by looking at your iPhone’s serial number. On the 1st generation iPhone, your serial number is on the back of the iPhone. On the 3G iPhone, you can find it on the SIM card tray. You can also find out by plugging the iPhone into iTunes.
The third, fourth and fifth digits of your serial number show the date. The third digit shows what year. 8 = 2008. 9 = 2009. The next two digits indicate what week. 21 = 21st week in the year. 52 = 52nd week in the year. For example, if the serial has an 8 followed by a 36 (xx836xxxxxx), it was manufactured in the 36th week of 2008. If you have a serial number with an 8 followed by 36 or lower, you should have the 5.8 bootloader. Any number after 36 indicates it was purchased after September 2008, most likely with bootloader 5.9. |
